National Geographic asked over 1,100 Americans their opinions on UFOs and alien invasions. A surprising number said they'd put their faith in imaginary leaders such as the Incredible Hulk, Batman, Spiderman, and President Obama.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The survey was done in advance of National Geographic's new series, Chasing UFOs. The survey revealed that 36 percent of Americans believe aliens are visiting Earth while a full 80 percent believe the government is keeping UFO information from the public. A full 55 percent say they believe government agents will visit and threaten anyone who reports alien sightings to the public.
More than two-thirds, 77 percent, say they believe aliens have visited Earth at some point in history. Almost the same number, 65 percent, think Obama would handle the situation better than Mitt Romney.
As for superheroes, the Hulk was the go-to choice for 21 percent, Batman for 12 percent, and Spiderman 8 percent.
Only a quarter of those surveyed said they'd try to befriend the aliens, while the rest responded with varying levels of xenophobia. A few suggested they would simply hide while 5 percent said they would be hostile to the aliens and attempt to inflict "bodily harm" on them.
By contrast, most scientists believe that the existence of life beyond Earth, including intelligent life is a virtual certainty, merely because the size and scale of space and time provide nearly infinite odds of seeing extraterrestrial life. However, it is rare to find any scientist that also believes such life has ever, or ever will, visit Earth.
The reasons for this have more to do with the nature of space, the length of time in which species can evolve into intelligence, and physical limitations on space travel, among others. Simply put, there's life out there, but it'll probably never show itself here.
And if it did, scientists such as the renowned Stephen Hawking said, we probably wouldn't want to meet it anyway, as he referenced the arrival of modern Europeans in the Americas.
So despite widespread public belief, and distrust in the government, our superheroes (and Obama) can rest at night knowing that they're unlikely to be called to fend off an alien invasion anytime soon.
