LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the coal mining industry lost thousands of jobs since its September 2014 peak.
"Since reaching a peak in September 2014, employment in mining has decreased by 191,000, with more than three-quarters of the loss in support activities for mining."
Historically, coal was important for fueling steam engines, furnaces and forges. As technology progressed, coal became a necessary source for the industrial revolution and beyond.
The price of coal began to fall as more and more activists claimed coal is a form of "dirty energy."
According to Green America, coal is the "absolute dirtiest of all energy sources and the greatest contributor of global warming."
The reality is coal mining leaves environmental scars and displaces billions of lifeforms. In an effort to reduce pollution, many U.S. Senators have been cutting mining jobs and, in turn, have offered "clean energy" job training.
In terms of economic value, mining is one of the world's largest consumers and producers of mineral products.
With more and more miners losing their jobs, less coal is produced and there is a higher demand for clean energy jobs. Meanwhile, nearly 200,000 miners have been displaced and are in need of employment.
