In his letter, dated May 2, Pope Francis articulated his vision during an audience with 300 priests at the Vatican. These priests were attendees of the "World Meeting of Parish Priests," a component of the ongoing Synod on Synodality. The Pope emphasized the significance of this meeting as a moment to reflect and pray for parish priests worldwide, whom he addressed with deep affection.

Expressing gratitude for the priests' daily dedication, Pope Francis acknowledged the crucial role they play in the life of the Church. "The Church could not continue without your dedication and your pastoral service," he stated, recognizing the efforts made by these clergy in diverse contexts to sow the Gospel.

The Pope's letter outlined three primary suggestions aimed at building a synodal and missionary Church. Firstly, he encouraged priests to engage more deeply with their specific ministerial charisms, enhancing their service to the community by recognizing and nurturing the varied gifts of the Holy Spirit within the laity. This approach, he noted, would not only mitigate the loneliness often felt in evangelization but would also foster a sense of paternal joy by empowering the congregation.

His second piece of advice focused on the practice of communal discernment. Drawing from experiences during the recent Synod on Synodality assembly, he urged priests to embrace and refine the art of 'conversation in the Spirit,' enhancing decision-making processes within their communities.

Finally, Pope Francis stressed the importance of fostering a spirit of sharing and fraternity, not just among priests but also with their bishops, emphasizing that authentic leadership in the Church stems from being good brothers and sons first. This foundational fraternity is essential for promoting true communion and participation within the communities they serve.

The four-day World Meeting of Parish Priests, held from April 29 to May 2 at the Fraterna Domus retreat house in Sacrofano, near Rome, concluded with the audience with Pope Francis. This gathering was organized in response to the synod assembly's call for greater clerical involvement in the synodal process and was a joint effort by the Dicastery for the Clergy and the General Secretariat of the Synod.

Among the attendees was Father Clinton Ressler from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, who shared with EWTN the enriching experience of connecting with fellow priests from various global contexts. He noted that regardless of geographic and cultural differences, the core experiences of joy, sorrow, and hope in priestly ministry remain universally resonant.
