Texans trade Matt Schaub to Raiders for draft pick
FREE Catholic Classes
The Houston Texans have traded veteran quarterback Matt Schaub to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for a late-round draft pick in 2014. While the deal is not yet finalized, Schaub will head over to Oakland after passing a required physical.
LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Schaub has been a starter for Houston since 2007, except for the 2013-14 season when he was benched early on after a terrible start in favor of Case Keenum, who played as the Texan's quarterback for the first time that season. Houston had high hopes, but ended up falling to a franchise record low of 2-14, and having the worst record for the 2013-14 season.
The Texans recently signed on former Tennessee Titan and veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and also have the first round draft pick amongst top quarterback choices such as Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles, and Johnny Manziel.
The Raiders are hoping to find a quarterback capable of leading Oakland out of an 11 year slump, without either a winning record or playoff berth. The Raiders dumped Carson Palmer in April of 2013, which is just one of the questionable choices made by that team in regards to quarterback selection.
The raiders traded a fifth-round pick for quarterback Matt Flynn before releasing him early last season, and acquired Tyler Wilson for a fourth-round pick before losing him to Tennessee.
The Raiders also picked up Matt McGloin as a free agent but is still viewed as a backup rather than a starter. Terrelle Pryor and Trent Edwards are also part of the team's quarterback staff, though Pryor's style doesn't mesh well with the current offensive playbook.
The Raiders have the fifth pick in May, and this move could allow the Raiders to use this selection to fill another hole in the team, instead of taking on another quarterback.
